Kwakiutl

Kwakiutl Tales by Franz Boas:

This is a collection of myths and folklore from the Kwakiutl Native Americans of British Columbia, Canada. They originally resided on the northern end of Vancouver Island and the adjacent coast. The texts were collected and translated by Franz Boas, who was one of the founders of modern anthropology and linguistics. These stories are much more satisfying for the Western reader than many unfiltered Native American texts, with rich characterizations, earthy humor, spooky supernatural settings, and, for once, actual beginnings, middles and ends. It is obvious that the Kwakuitl were accomplished story tellers.

If your looking for a "Kwakiutl legend/myth" this is a good place to start.

AboutDiscipline.com

Punishments and Rewards Failings

The following excerpt at the website above is from the book Discipline Without Stress, by Marvin Marshall.

"INTERNAL APPROACHES

If an approach is used where people are motivated to be responsible--where internal rather than external motivation is at work--then obedience becomes a natural by-product.

Accepting responsibility is the surest and quickest way to change behavior. Such was the case as described in a Newsweek story (January 21, 2002, pages 42-44).

A student had been constantly clowning around and misbehaving in an English class. He was sent to the office. The meted out consequence was to go back to the teacher after class and apologize. He approached Ms. Vines and said, "I'm sorry I disrupted your class." She accepted the apology. To Robert, the simple act of fessing up, standing accountable for his wrongs, struck a chord with him. He said it made him feel like a man. He started acting like one.

Robert's case is not uncommon. The key is to lead students to accept responsibility. This is accomplished by using a noncoercive approach to discipline.

That is the strategy used in The Raise Responsibility System--a powerful and exciting proactive program that raises individual and social responsibility and promotes motivation for learning. The program is used across the entire teaching spectrum--from small childcare centers to large high schools and from rural schools in Texas to urban schools in New York City. The strategy also can be used in any home or youth setting."

I've enjoyed what I have scanned quickly from the book, and quite agree with his takes on responsibility.

Buzzword

buzzword is Adobes recently purchased, flash based, word processor. It is amazingly simply, and should be good for students who do assignments at school, home, and study centres whom do not have access to a flash drive, are working on incompatible platforms or programs.

Simple up your work routine and use an online word processor... It's amazingly cheaper and simpler than Word. But heh, I use indesign for just about everything now and word is pretty much just taking up space on my computer at home and at work. (Except of course that the students are very fond of Word... Students, use an online word processor, it'll save me the time of explaining how to email your assignment to yourself and you won't have that scary feeling like I'm working on a Mac with Word, is it going to work on my windows machine at school with god knows what version of widows or word? Unless of course you are forced to use Word, that you can't do much about.)

File Sharing

Register and store files up to 100mb online with others for free. It is simple, easy to use, and you have the option of having the files password protected. All you do is send the url to the person you would like to share the file/files with, and voila your done.

Cougar Sighting

Just a reminder to the students from Fort Rupert or anybody that happens to be visiting Fort Rupert that there was a cougar sighted twice yesterday and one killed last week by the conservation officer. Yesterday the cougar (the one that was not killed) was seen near Fort Rupert General Store (Larry Hunt's Store) and Mable and Pete Knox's house. Use caution when walking or outside. There have also been numerous bears in the village, therefore use your common sense when out and about.

The Mean Starfish

by John

this picture comes from deviantart.com

Once upon a time there was a starfish, his name was Bob. He was a very mean star fish. Whenever another sea creature came by he would call them a name like the one octopus who went by everyday. He would say "Watch out Octo Boy or one day I'll take your tentacles off and sell them to a human and make chop suwee or other things." But one day a diver came and took Bob while he was bugging the octopus. But the Octopus jumped on the diver and saved the starfish and the starfish lived happily ever after.

Well this my first post for Homework Club, and I have no doubt that it'll be a bit before I send invites out to the students.

So for my first post I will recommend iknowthat.com.
image of leons math dojo
iknowthat.com is full of activities from most subjects for students from preschool to grade 7/8. The kids here have enjoyed Leon's Math Dojo. But if you asked them I am sure that they'd say they'd prefer going to a game on addictinggames.com without having to do any math or reading... but rules are rules. :)
